Have you ever thought you found the perfect spot and then something just goes wrong? Have you ever thought a minor issue could turn into something more? In the short story, “Harlem is Art, Harlem as Art” by Valerie Kinloch, Philip had to overcome many obstacles and deal with negative situations throughout his home just like I have to deal with negatives in my dorm room. Philip was forced to deal with problems because there were many people out to change and reshape the entire city of Harlem. It was not fair to him because if the Harlem citizens had to live through an entire city change, it would take away from their true culture and identity. Philip and the Harlem citizens had to fight for what they wanted which was to keep the city as is so their natural culture is not destroyed. I am able to relate to Philip because I thought my dorm room was a perfect place and then I realized that there was one large issue that I would have to try to work my way around or fight for to be fixed. In the dorms at Fairleigh Dickinson University, the WIFI connection is extremely weak  and has snowballed into causing many other problems for myself as well as majority of the other students on campus.
Fairleigh Dickinson University has dorms that contain almost anything you need. When you walk in, there are two closets, two beds, two desks, two chairs, many outlets, cable television and floor space. Each room on the campus contains it’s own personal wireless router. So, if each room has its own wireless router, then how is the connection consistently so bad?
Firstly, the connection no matter where you go, whether it is a dorm room or a classroom on campus, is extremely slow and sometimes will even refuse to connect to the Internet. When the Internet is slow, it can cause you to fall behind during class and potentially make you unable to participate if the connection is dropped (which frequently occurs). The slow connection even causes issues for the Professors that are trying to teach the class. They only have a limited amount of time because semesters breeze on by and they are over just like that. If the connection remains how it is now, with consistently dropping and the slow moving Internet, teachers may not get their curse requirements done for the semester which is a huge problem for the students who need to go on to a higher level class. The connection needs to be fixed so there are no more losses of connection and a much faster Internet overall.
Another major issue with the WIFI is that because of the slow connection and dropped connection, it has snowballed into causing me to go over my data every single month. I know I have heard many students have been going over their data due to the problem with the terrible connection. Now, this issue of going over data means that you are charged money by whomever your carrier is: Verizon, Sprint, AT&T etc… That is completely unfair if students have to pay extra money for going over their data just because the connection at Fairleigh Dickinson University is extremely slow. In my opinion, it is not the student’s fault the WIFI connection is terrible and is causing students to go over their data. Therefore, if the students are being charged extra money for a problem caused by Fairleigh Dickinson University, then the University should be paying for it, not the students.
One last major issue that the dreadful WIFI connection causes is that if it consistently fails to connect or takes up too much time to load, it can penalize students for late or missing assignments for no apparent reason. For example: I had to explain to my professor why my homework had to be handed to her on paper rather than submitted due to my dorm room connection deciding not to connect which again does not make sense because there is a personal wireless router in each room. With that, if professors decide not to accept that students WIFI excuse (which is a valid excuse because the WIFI problem is known) then students will continue to get poor grades. Therefore, if students are getting poor grades, then the University itself will gain a bad reputation, which might cause fewer enrollments for the future years.
They are a few solutions to potentially help fix the problem with the WIFI. Firstly I believe that the University needs to update all of the routers on each floor. I do not think it is fair that all of the students have to be connecting to poor wireless routers. I believe that with all of the money we pay for our tuition, we deserve the best quality routers. So the first solution is to replace the routers we have now with the newest, top brand routers currently in stock.
Another solution to help students with the poor WIFI connection would be to supply each and every dorm room on the Fairleigh Dickinson University campus with Ethernet cables. This would take care of the situation whenever the WIFI connection would fail or run slowly. Any time the WIFI is down, the Ethernet cables should be available to plug into your laptop as well as an outlet in the wall which will generate connection. If every single room is supplied with an Ethernet cable, that will be the backup plan for whenever the wireless connection decides to fail.
One last solution to help solve the WIFI connection issue is to have someone check the routers each week to confirm that they are up and running. The University can schedule and hire a crew of computer technicians to check either each week or every two weeks that the routers are all working. If someone can consistently check the routers and fix them when not working each week or on a frequent basis, then the students will be able to function a lot easier. FDU should hire a group of workers to check the wireless routers throughout the campus on a regular basis.
In conclusion, there are many problems with the WIFI connection on campus at FDU. The connection is always failing which can cause students to receive poor grades and many students to go over their data for no reason. The solutions are that the University has to supply new routers, hire a crew to check them on a frequent basis and supply each room with Ethernet cables. This would all help generate a better reputation for the school and benefit the students as well. The WIFI connection in the dorm rooms has many faults but they can all be fixed if FDU follows through with these solutions.
