“How to Tame a Wild Tongue” Questions

1.     In the opening scene of this piece of writing, Anzaldua is sitting in the dentist chair while the dentist is claiming her tongue has gone wild. This is making a strong point about the rest of the essay because she is identifying herself as her native language. But not just her native language, she speaks so many different types of Spanish tones that she has gone wild.

2.     Anzaldua used a lot of Spanish and different types of Spanish throughout her writing. At first it was difficult to pick up why she was doing it but then it finally clicked that she was trying to show herself off that she can speak all of these tones. To prove she can speak those tones, she actually gave the readers including myself a short lesson on how each tone is used and where it is used.

3.     I believe that it can be considered standard Spanish because it is just slang. The way the language is taught makes it similar upon each other.

4.     The necessity of speaking and writing academic English is very important because it defines who you are in more detail as a person. I believe it brings more of you out showing that you can write and vocally speak to talk to others.

5.     The various types of English identities I know are the common tone we speak currently. There is also British English spoken in Europe and Shakespearian English as well. Those are the only other types of English I know of but am geared to learn others.

6.     I do not use any secret language to speak with my friends.

7.     When I am around my friends, I majority of the time I speak nonstandard English but around my teacher, parents and people I do not really know, I always use Standard English.

8.     If you say that you are your language, you are saying you stand by everything your language says or does. You stand by your culture and your language brings out the true person you are.

9.     The introduction explains exactly how the conclusion completes the story. When she explains how her tongue is going wild because of all of the different types of Spanish tones she has, it leads all the way to the conclusion because she defines all of the tones in detail.

10.  Yes, language you speak can definitely bring out who you are. If you take pride in the language you speak, then that will show and generate the person you really are.

11.  In my opinion, my identity is important to me but I do not care what people think of me. I am the only person that knows the true me and who I really am.
